Shingrix Vaccine – Immunisation Program
Now included in the government immunisation program, the Shingrix vaccination offers a layer of protection against shingles, as currently there is no cure.
Shingrix recommended as a two-dose (2 – 6 months apart) primary course for the following eligible groups:
- Adults aged 65 and over
- Immunocompromised adults 18 years and over
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 50 years and over
Patients who have previously received Zostavax free under NIP cannot receive free Shingrix until at least 5 years after the Zostavax dose.
Patients who have previously received Zostavax privately are eligible to receive Shingrix free under NIP. An interval of at least 12 months is recommended between paid Zostavax and free Shingrix.
Unfortunately, the initial supply of Shingrix is very limited. More vaccines will be available in the coming months.
Immunocompromised patients would be prioritized for Shingrix injections.
